The Department of Economics is one of the oldest and leading departments in the Arts Stream of Morigaon College. The Department was established in 1964 under the affiliation of Gauhati University. At the time of its establishment there were 01 faculty and 09 of students. The Honous / Major course was initiated in this department in 1977. Since 1977, the Department has been discharging its roles and responsibilities for the interests of the students of Economics in particular and the whole student community in general. In the early years the faculty member Prof. Jiten Saikia served for couple of years and he was followed by Prof. Sudhir Borthakur and Prof. Jamini Mahanta. During last part of 1970s the department became full-fledged department with the faculty members namely Prof Sudhir Borthakur( retd. in 2007) , Prof. Chidam Deuri ( retd in 2008), Prof. Madhab Larak( Retd. in 2009), Prof. Dhaneswar Bora ( retd. in 2016). Presently the Department has 4 full time permanent faculty members namely Parag Jyoti Mahanta( joined in 1996), Chandan Sarma ( joined in 2008), Dr. Budhen Kumar Saikia( joined in 2010) and Mrinmoyee Baishya ( joined in 2017). Presently Dr. Budhen Kumr Saikia is in the chair of HOD.
Retd. Faculty Prof Chidam Deuri was elected as CEM, of TIWA AUTONOMOUS COUNCIL, the Adminstrative Body of Tribal Council. Dr. Budhen Kumar Saikia acted as Assistant Generat Secretary of Assam College Teachers Association from 2009 to 2011 and presently serving as Joint Secretary of The Indian Economic Association.
