With the experience gained from 32 years of teaching and keeping in view the needs and demands of a changed scenario in academic world, the academic progress of the department has been overhauled as per UGC guidelines since 1985 and accordingly a new syllabus and curriculum for TDC is prepared by Gauhati University with inclusion of new topics like Molecular Biology, Taxonomy, Animal Behaviour, Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Bioenergetics, Communication Biology, Social Biology, Wild life Management and Conservation, Economic Zoology, Toxicology, Physiology, Biochemistry etc.A UGC assisted Vocational Course (UG) on Industrial Fish and Fisheries (IFF) has been running since 2005 but unfortunately it was stopped due to unavailability of students. A UGC assisted Vocational Course (UG) on Biomass and Biogas Technology (BBT) has been running in the department under the guidance of the department. The college has introduced PG course (M Sc in Zoology) in the year 2018 and has been running under the Gauhati University.

FACILITIES AND ASSETS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department has a rich collection of Porifera, Coelenterate, Arthropods, Mollusca, Echinodermata, Amphibians, Reptiles and Birds; especially Fishes from almost all the geographically diversified areas of North-Eastern Region of India. It is also having a modest sitting room (25x25), a departmental library with 434 books for UG and 98 for PG courses [arranged in five bookshelves, 100 journals and some departmental collections/publications, four (4) well equipped laboratories cum class room(30x36, 30x36, 30x36), two museums (12x36), computer facilities, one newly renovated class roomcum laboratory (30x52) for P.G.class; besides, class room for biomass and biogas technology (BBT).There are two digital classrooms.Three rooms having LCD projectors, one slide projector and two overhead projectors have been using by the teachers of the department since 2010. There are three computers for documentation and records along with one Xerox machine is also available.

POST GRADUATE COURSE
The Governing Body has proposed (in 2015-2016 session) to open Post Graduate Course in the department and applied to the University for permission. The department has also started post graduate course from the session 2018-19. So, the Governing Body has renovated awell-equipped laboratory and a class roomfor the PG course in Zoology from session 2018-19 to meet the demand of the stidents. College has  introduced two years PG Diploma Course on Biomass and Biogas Technology (UGC assistance) has been running fruitfully in the college under the guidance of Zoology Department since August/2009.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
The system is divided into four Steps (for UG and PG)-a. Class Test/ Unit Test.
b. Sessional Examination.
c. Pre-final Examination.
d. Final Examination.
Class/Unit test is conducted at the class room in the presence of class teacher and the record is recorded in the departmental record book. Sessional and pre-final examination is conducted by the college authority after the completion of 50% and 90% of the syllabus respectively. Final examination is also conducted by the college authority under the guideline of Controller of Examinations, Gauhati University, Assam.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Being a State/ UGC funded college, the developmental activities of the college or the department is largely or basically dependent on the college authority or on the financial commitment of the Government of Assam or on the UGC. Some extramural income from the fish pond and animal house received time to time, which helps the department to a few.

EXCURSION/FIELDWORK/ PROJECT REPORT FOR THE STUDENTS
We are grateful to the college authority for their kind permission to arrange excursion/fieldwork/project report in every year which is a part of the curriculum. The main aim of the excursion/fieldwork/project report is to study the conservation, distribution, ecological status, taxonomy, pollution status, wetland ecosystem, wasteland ecosystem and behaviors of animals and plants especially in North Eastern Region of India in particular and in India in general. Besides, visit to a well-equipped laboratory/ National parks/ ZSI/sanctuaries etc., inside India is also a part of this educational tour and curriculum.

EXHIBITION/ SEMINAR/ POPULAR TALK AMONG STUDENTS
It is a known fact that unawareness of science or scientific knowledge in backward areas in our locality causes superstition problems. To solve this problem among the society or among the students our department is arranging an exhibition, group discussion, seminar and popular talk every year in some predetermined specific areas. The teachers and students take part in every program of the department. Besides, the teachers and students are performing in determination of blood group, hemoglobin content, RBC content, WBC content, or exhibiting science models or exhibiting different marine and freshwater species of fishes or animals sincerely as a result of which people or students of the region are benefited greatly by these programs.

BIRDS WATCHING CAMP/ TRAINING ON FISH DRYING
We are grateful to the college authority for promoting the birds watching camp in different places of the state and training programme on fish drying in the college every year and as such we the department of Zoology can run these programs successfully since 2005. The training program has been running under the guidance of Fishery College, Raha, Nagaon. Under birds watching program we often visit the important National Park, Sanctuary, Wetland, Zoo, etc. where migratory or resident birds are available. To make this camp successful the teaching staff and students from all the classes are trying utmost and make them understand what birds watching camp is.
